Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress

Ever awakened feeling more tired than you did when you first got into bed? It could be the mattress. The problem with the traditional coil and latex mattress is that a few seconds after you lie down, the air pressure pushes the bed back into its original shape. Unfortunately, it also forces you to sleep in an unnatural position - hence the crick in your neck - or triggers long hours of tossing and turning as you try to look for a comfortable position.

And then NASA (yes, NASA!) developed a technology that would change the science of sleep forever. They were looking for a way to cushion astronauts from the bumps and pressure of space travel, including G-force pressure.  They discovered what they called “visco elastic foam” an incredible material which actually adjusted to the body’s contours, providing support while alleviating pressure. Never mind traveling through outer space - it sounded like the makings of the perfect bed. The Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattress (also known as the memory foam mattress) was born.

What’s so great about a Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattress?

Lie down on a Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattress, and you’ll notice one thing: you feel like you’re melting into the bed (it’s that soft), but you also feel snug and comfortable. It seems to cradle you, adjusting to the contours of your body and supporting you from all sides - even the vulnerable neck and shoulder area. You can completely relax.

Now get up and you’ll see another quality of a Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattress: it slowly springs back to its original shape. No danger of the gradual sagging that you’ll see in the traditional coil mattress; no risk that it only feels good the first few times, then turns into a wobbly mess after one too many pillow fights. It is durable - precisely because NASA scientists anticipated that the material would go through almost insane levels of wear and tear in outer space.

Why is it called a Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattress?

It’s a mouthful - count on scientists to find an unwieldy name for anything. “Visco” comes from “viscous”, referring to its being very sensitive to temperatures. When exposed to higher temperatures (i.e. the body heat you generate when you lie down on the bed), the material becomes softer, bouncier, and more malleable. It adjusts to the body’s counters and gives that feeling of being wrapped in softness.  At normal temperatures, it hardens and recovers its natural form. Scientists call this “elasticity”, the ability to stretch and return to (or “remember”) its original shape.
