Nautilus Sleep System

Nautilus Sleep System beds are high end air mattresses designed to provide better support than traditional mattresses. Much like waterbeds, Nautilus Sleep Systems were designed to provide support over the entire body and eliminate the pressure point problems associated with traditional coil spring mattresses, air mattresses not only eliminate the problems associated with traditional bedding, but also eliminate some of the problems associated with waterbeds. Waterbed mattresses are heavy and take time to fill and empty and must employ elaborate baffling systems to stop sleep disrupting waves from forming and the water itself needs to be conditioned to avoid mold, bacteria and algae buildup. Air mattresses can also be adjusted individually, with each side of the bed having a separate firmness according to each person’s needs. Some of the major brands of air mattresses on the market are Select Comfort, Comfortaire, Sleep Comfort, and Luxury Air Beds.

Nautilus Sleep System mattress is adjusted manually with a remote control system. The hand control unit allows for individual adjustments to each side of the mattress, allowing you to adjust each side independently. Unlike some air mattresses however, the Nautilus Sleep System’s hand controls do not have a digital readout, making it difficult to return the mattress to the firmness you prefer if the level is changed. The Nautilus Sleep System mattress does not have a divider in the center of it as some air mattresses do, avoiding the problem of a ridge in the center when the two sides are set dramatically differently. The mattress also comes with zip-on pillow tops. Silk, wool and cashmere are some of the fabrics available for the top.

Some air mattress systems have a separate air pump that sits beneath or next to the bed. The Nautilus Sleep System air pump is located inside the bed itself, making it easier if you have to move the bed. No more dragging the pump along with the mattress when moving the bed.

The Nautilus Sleep System mattress consists of 6 layers of material. The base or what would normally be a box spring usually consists of a firm foam base on the frame. The air mattress rests on top of this and consists of the patented Dual Locking air chambers. Over this lies the 3.5” Fingered Foam padding. This is a foam pad that resembles an egg carton or the sound proof baffling seen in audio booths. Then comes the zip on top of the mattress, which has two zippers, one for the pillow top and one for the bed’s bottom. Then there is a layer of foam, either memory foam like the Tempurpedic Foam or some other foam material, and on top of this is the 2” thick zip on pillow top.

To better focus on its core brands, Nautilus exited the sleep system business in 2005.

Nautilus Sleep System mattresses are a series of adjustable air mattresses that come in four series: Ultimate, Premier, Signature, and Basic. Like many other air mattresses, Nautilus Sleep System has dual remote controls so that each side of the bed can be adjusted individually through the remote control handset. The system comes with two handsets, one for each side of the bed.

Nautilus Sleep System mattress consists of several layers. At the heart of this system is the Variable Support Air Chambers. Encased within the Foam Rail Internal Support System, the air chambers are set side by side for individual adjustment control. The whole setup is then covered with a layer of foam and then wrapped in a polyester mattress cover. The Ultimate series comes with Tempur pedic foam. Once assembled, Nautilus Sleep System mattress looks no different from an ordinary coil spring mattress.
